# Is hypershot private? Your screenshots stay on your machine

> We never see your screenshots. Your captures stay private, on your device: OCR runs locally, sharing goes through your own OS, and here's exactly what does touch the network: license activation, update checks and usage analytics you can switch off.

The most common question we get is a version of: *do my screenshots go to you?*

The short answer, quoted straight: **No. We never see your captures. They're files on your device, and they stay there until you send one somewhere yourself, through your own operating system's share options or as a file you pick. OCR runs on-device. What does touch the network is license activation, update checks and usage analytics. None of them include your captures, and you can switch the analytics off.**

## What "private" means for a screenshot tool

Screenshots can hold anything that was on your screen: a customer's name, a password field you didn't mean to frame, a dashboard with someone's payroll. So the question is never "does the app *say* it's private." The question is: trace the image's path from your screen to the other person's hands, and name every machine it touched in between.

In hypershot, that path is short:

1. **Capture.** The frame is recorded on your device. Nothing is transmitted.
2. **Edit.** Annotations, redactions, spotlights — all local. The OCR tool reads text using macOS's Vision framework or Windows's OCR APIs; it never ships your pixels to a server to be read.
3. **Share.** You pick a destination from your OS's share panel — AirDrop, Nearby Sharing, mail, a message, a chat app — or you save a file, or you drag the image into another app. The bytes go from your machine to wherever *you* point, using *your* OS's channels.

At no step does a copy of your image come to us.

## We never look at your captures

Your screenshots and annotations are yours. We don't see them, we don't collect them, and nothing in hypershot sends them to us. They're made, edited and stored on your device, and they leave it only when you send them.

## What does reach the network

Here's the complete list, so you don't have to take "private" on faith:

- **License activation.** When you activate, hypershot checks your license key with our licensing service, along with the email you bought it with and basic device information (OS version, hardware model), so a license knows which machines hold it.
- **Update checks.** hypershot checks for new versions in the background. You can turn that off in **Settings → About** and check by hand instead.
- **Usage analytics.** Counts of which features get used, performance numbers, and crash reports, processed by [Countly](https://countly.com), our analytics provider. It's on by default, and you can switch it off in **Settings → About** ("Help improve the app by sharing usage data"); turning it off stops collection immediately.

What none of those ever include: your screenshots, your recordings, your annotations, the text OCR reads, or the contents of your files. The [privacy policy](/legal/privacy/) spells out every field, in plain language.

## What this means for you

Send a screenshot of a client's screen straight to that client, without it passing through anyone else's servers. Paste a redacted error into a support ticket knowing the unredacted version never left your machine. OCR a form on a screen your compliance policy says never leaves the office.

Your captures stay on your device, and we never see them.
