# Settings

All of hyperbin's settings live in the menu — click the hyperbin item in
your **menu bar (macOS)** or **system tray (Windows)**. There is no
separate settings window.

## Show Animation

The master switch. Untick it to pause every effect without changing any
other setting. The menu's status line at the top tells you at a glance what
is in the bin and whether something is blocking the effect (for example a
missing permission on macOS).

## Effect

Picks which effect runs: **Flies**, **Ooze**, or **Tentacles**. See
[The Effects](/docs/hyperbin/effects) for what each one does. If you never
choose, the default is **Flies**.

## Amount

How much of the running effect you get, in four flavours:

| Option | Behaviour |
|--------|-----------|
| **Just a Little** | A small, fixed presence |
| **More Trash, More Effect** (default) | Scales with how full the bin is, relative to the Trash Threshold |
| **Oh the Horror!** | A lot, regardless of fullness |
| **Make It Stop** | The maximum |

> **Note — Trash Threshold**
> The **Trash Threshold** submenu (*1 MB*, *100 MB* (default), *1 GB*,
> *5 GB+*) only applies in *More Trash, More Effect* mode — it defines how
> much in the bin counts as "full". In the other three modes it is greyed
> out.

## Low Power Mode

Three states: **Auto** (default), **On**, or **Off**.

- **Auto** follows your system's own low power setting (macOS Low Power
  Mode, Windows Battery Saver)
- **On** throttles the effects whenever you're using it, even on mains
- **Off** runs every effect at your display's full refresh rate

## Open at Login

Starts hyperbin when you log in. It is **on by default** and is registered
once on first run; unticking it afterwards sticks.

- macOS: registered through the system, so it appears in **System Settings
→ Login Items** like any other app
- Windows: registered in the Startup folder

## Share Usage Data

hyperbin can send **optional usage analytics**, and from 1.1.0 this is
**on by default**. Turning it off in the menu makes it stay off.

What is collected is deliberately small: which effect is running, how the
amount and threshold are set, whether the bin got emptied, the app version
and the operating system. It is **never** file names, paths, or anything
about what you threw away.

## Show Splash

Shows the splash screen on demand — for anyone who wants another look at
it. On login it appears once and clears itself after a few seconds.

## Check for Updates…

Checks for a new release. Checks run in the background daily and nothing
installs itself without being asked.

## Quit hyperbin

Ends the app. Since it opens at login by default, it will be back at your
next login unless you untick **Open at Login** first.
