# Artboard

The artboard is the frame around your screenshot — what you crop to, and what
gets exported. Hypershot lets you dress it up with a background, a drop
shadow, window chrome, and rounded corners.

## The artboard tool

Select the **Artboard** tool in the toolbar (shortcut **B**). Handles appear
around the capture, and the tool options above the toolbar show, from left to
right:

| Option | What it does |
|--------|--------------|
| **Size** | Width × height inputs with an aspect-ratio lock — see [Artboard Size](#artboard-size) |
| **Background** | **Solid**, **Gradient**, or **Image** fill, plus the shadow controls once a background is on — see [Backgrounds](#backgrounds) |
| **Chrome** | Adds a **macOS** or **Windows** title bar — see [Window Chrome](#window-chrome) |
| **Snap** | Snaps the handles to edges while you drag |

Clicking an annotation or empty canvas switches back to the Select tool.

## Artboard size

Without a background, the artboard *is* the crop: drag the handles to crop
the capture. With a background on, there are two sets of handles — the inner
ones crop the screenshot, the outer ones set the padding around it (and so the
size of the whole artboard).

### Size inputs

The **Size** option shows the export size in pixels. Type a width or height
and press **Enter** or **Tab** to apply it; the **↑ / ↓** arrow keys nudge the
value. With a background on, the inputs size the whole artboard; without one,
they size the crop. Each side is capped at 8192px.

Click the **lock** button next to the inputs to lock the aspect ratio at its
current proportions. While it's locked, changing one dimension changes the
other, and dragging the handles keeps the same ratio. Locking never resizes
anything by itself.

### Snap

With **Snap** ticked (the default), the artboard's handles snap while you drag
— to the image bounds, edges detected in the screenshot, and annotation edges.
The setting is remembered for future captures.

## Backgrounds

Add a background behind your screenshot to give it context and polish. Pick a
fill type with the three toggles in the **Background** option; click the
active toggle again to remove the background.

| Type | Description |
|------|-------------|
| **Solid** | One flat color — click the color swatch next to the toggles to change it |
| **Gradient** | A generated multi-color gradient with grain — see [Gradients](#gradients) |
| **Image** | A blurred copy of your capture, or an image of your own — see [Image Fill](#image-fill) |

When a background is first turned on, it gets 75 px of padding on every side.
Drag the outer handles to change it.

### Gradients

Choosing **Gradient** opens the gradient popover (click the gradient swatch to
reopen it later). It has two tabs:

**Presets** — twelve ready-made gradients: **Dawn**, **Ocean**, **Aurora**,
**Candy**, **Midnight**, **Forest**, **Electric**, **Terracotta**, **Lagoon**,
**Cosmic**, **Mono**, and **Capture**. **Capture** takes its colors from your
screenshot, so the background harmonizes with whatever you captured.

**Custom** — build your own:

- **Style** — Step through the gradient styles with the arrows on either side
of its name (each preset's style, from Dawn's bands to Mono's corners)
- **Color slots** — Click a slot to pick that color
- **Rotation** (0–360°), **Scale**, **Warp**, and **Grain** sliders
- **🎲 Randomize** — Rolls a random style, settings, and a harmonious palette

### Image fill

Choosing **Image** opens a small picker with two options:

- **Blur** — A blurred copy of your capture fills the background
- **Image** — Click it to choose an image file for the
background. Once imported, click it to switch back to it; hover and click
  the **×** to remove it

### Shadow

Once a background is on, shadow controls appear after the fill controls:

| Control | Range | Default |
|---------|-------|---------|
| **Opacity** slider | 0–100% | 35% |
| **Blur** slider | 0–100 | 90 |
| **Angle dial** | Direction and distance | Straight down, 15 px |

On the angle dial, the dot's position around the circle sets the shadow's
direction, and its distance from the center sets how far the shadow falls
(up to 100 px). Hold **Shift** while dragging the dot to snap the direction to
45° steps.

## Window chrome

Add a window title bar above your screenshot for a polished presentation look.

- **macOS** — macOS-style title bar with traffic light buttons
- **Windows** — Windows-style title bar

Pick a style in the **Chrome** option. Click the active style again to remove
chrome entirely.

## Corner radius

Round the corners of your artboard for a softer, modern look.

- **Inner corner radius** — Rounds the screenshot/capture corners
- **Background corner radius** — Rounds the outer background corners independently

By default, inner and outer radii are independent. Hold **Shift** while dragging either set of handles to maintain a linked 1.4× ratio between them.

## Reset Artboard

To start over, choose **Edit → Reset Artboard** (on Windows, in the editor
menu in the title bar). It restores the original crop, removes the
background, and resets the padding. Your annotations aren't touched, and the
reset can be undone.
