# Onboarding

The first time you launch hypershot, a short onboarding flow walks you through
permissions, shortcuts, and the basics. It runs once — here's what to expect,
and how to get back into each part later.

## The flow

1. **License agreement** — the legal terms, accepted once per version. The app
won't continue until the current version's terms are accepted
2. **Welcome** — what hypershot is and how the menu-bar app works
3. **Shortcuts** — your Region, Window, Screen and OCR hotkeys, with a chance
   to change them
4. **Guided tour** — capture history, screenshots, and the editor, narrated
step by step, with settings alongside: save directory; after-capture
behavior, capture window length and reticle style; accent color, theme
   and UI scale
5. **Purchase** (optional) — pricing straight from the store. Skippable; the
7-day trial runs either way. If you've already bought, enter your license
key later in **Settings → About** (see [Licensing](/docs/hypershot/settings/licensing)).

On macOS, permissions aren't an onboarding step: if Screen Recording or
Accessibility is missing at launch, a separate **Permissions** window appears
first (see [Permissions](#permissions-in-detail) below).

## Permissions in detail

### Screen Recording (macOS, required)

hypershot captures the screen through macOS's native capture APIs, which
requires the Screen Recording permission. Grant it when prompted; if you
missed the prompt, enable it in **System Settings → Privacy & Security →
Screen Recording**.

> After toggling Screen Recording, macOS requires you to quit and reopen
> hypershot for the grant to take effect.

### Accessibility (macOS, recommended)

The default hotkeys work without it — they avoid combos macOS reserves.
Accessibility is needed only if you want a macOS system shortcut (like ⌘⇧4)
as a capture hotkey. Enable in **System Settings → Privacy & Security →
Accessibility**. hypershot appears in the list after it first requests the
permission — flip the switch and you're done.

### Windows

No permissions are needed — global hotkeys and capture work out of the box.

### Optional: Quick Look extension

See [Quick Look Extension](/docs/hypershot/getting-started/quicklook) — it's
toggled in System Settings, not requested in-app.

## Shortcuts

The onboarding shortcut step sets your global capture hotkeys (defaults:
`⌘⇧2` region and `⌘⇧1` full screen on macOS; `Ctrl+Shift+3` region and
`Ctrl+Shift+1` full screen on Windows — see
[Hotkeys](/docs/hypershot/settings/hotkeys) for the full list). If a hotkey
conflicts with the system or another app, a warning appears next to it. You
can change them any time in **Settings → Shortcuts**.

## Re-running parts of it

Nothing in onboarding is one-shot:

- Permissions (macOS): **Show Permissions Setup** in the menu bar menu
  re-checks and re-requests
- Shortcuts: **Settings → Shortcuts**
- The tour: **Show Onboarding** in the menu bar / tray menu (or turn on
**Settings → Appearance → Onboarding → Show at startup**)
