# Hotkeys

Customize the global keyboard shortcuts for all capture actions.

## Accessing shortcuts

1. Click the hypershot icon in your menu bar / system tray
2. Select **Settings**
3. Go to the **Shortcuts** tab

> **Note — Experimental hotkeys**
> The **Composite screen** hotkey only works (and only appears in the Shortcuts tab) while experimental features are enabled (**Settings → General → Enable experimental features**).

## Changing a hotkey

1. Click the hotkey field you want to change
2. Press your new key combination — the recorder captures the exact keys you press, including system shortcuts
3. The new hotkey is saved automatically

> **Info — No automatic substitution**
> hypershot registers exactly what you press — it does **not** silently substitute a "safe" alternative if you choose a system shortcut. If your chosen combo can't be registered (e.g. it's claimed by macOS or another app), a warning appears in Settings explaining the conflict.

### Tips for choosing hotkeys

- The **⌘⇧ / Ctrl+Shift** family is a good base — it avoids most OS conflicts
- Avoid combinations used by other apps
- Avoid single keys (too easy to trigger accidentally)

## Conflict detection

hypershot detects hotkey conflicts dynamically:

- **macOS:** Conflicts with enabled system shortcuts are detected live (not from a hardcoded list). If you've disabled a macOS screenshot shortcut in System Settings, hypershot recognizes it's available and won't show a false warning.
- **Registration failures** (another app owns the combo, or Accessibility permission is missing) are surfaced as warnings in the Shortcuts tab.

> **Tip — Disabling macOS system shortcuts**
> If a default macOS shortcut conflicts with your preferred hypershot hotkey, open **System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts** and disable the system shortcut there. hypershot will detect it's now available.

## Resetting to defaults

There's no hotkeys-only reset. **Settings → General → Reset All Settings** restores every setting — hotkeys included — to its default, after a confirmation prompt.

## Platform notes

### macOS
- The default hotkeys work **without** Accessibility permission — they deliberately avoid combos macOS reserves
- **Accessibility permission** is needed only to use a macOS system shortcut (like ⌘⇧4) as a capture hotkey
- Grant in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility; while it's off, the Shortcuts tab shows a banner with a **Set up** button

### Windows
- Works out of the box
- Some hotkeys may be reserved by Windows
