hypershot vs. ScreenSnap Pro
ScreenSnap Pro is a cross-platform one-time-purchase tool that leans hard into making screenshots look like marketing material: gradient backdrops, polished annotation, cloud links, and screen recording with a timeline editor. It is the right answer if the screenshot is the deliverable — a product shot, a post, a demo. It is a different answer if the screenshot is evidence, a bug report, or a frame you still want to touch.
The short answer
ScreenSnap Pro is a cross-platform one-time purchase focused on beautiful output and cloud links. hypershot is the one-time cross-platform alternative that keeps the capture alive: frame scrubbing while you select, an editable .hypercapture you can hand off still-editable, and no cloud in the loop.

Where hypershot is different
Burst capture
While you drag the selection, hypershot keeps a rolling clip of the last moment. Scrub the timeline to the exact frame — the hover state that closed when you blinked, the animation mid-motion.
The crop is never final
A region capture keeps the whole screen, so you can drag the crop back out later and everything you left out is still there, even after you reopen the file. Then add padding, swap the background, drop in window chrome.
Edits like a design app
A real canvas, not a markup sheet. Zoom and pan, marquee-select, move, resize and rotate with handles, bring to front or send to back, snap the crop to edges in the shot. Every change undoes, 500 steps deep by default.
Non-destructive, all the way down
Nothing gets burned in until you export. Every mark stays an object, the crop and background stay live, and the burst stays with the capture. Save a .hypercapture, reopen it next week, and move an arrow, re-crop, or pick a different frame.

Where ScreenSnap Pro is the right tool
- One-time purchase on both platforms, 30-day refund
- Screen recording with a timeline and webcam
- Cloud sharing links
Where it leaves you wanting
- The capture is dressed and done: no live editing, no scrubbing back to the exact frame
- Cloud-first sharing when the job is often just "send the file to the person next to me"
- No editable capture format to hand off
- The crop is final: a region capture keeps only the region, so a crop that came out too tight means taking the shot again
Switching from ScreenSnap Pro
Most of what you do in ScreenSnap Pro has a counterpart in hypershot, on the same two platforms. Install hypershot (on a Mac, give it Screen Recording permission). Turn off ScreenSnap’s two capture shortcuts, because they clash with hypershot’s defaults. Export any recording projects you’re still editing, because those open only in ScreenSnap. Your screenshots are already ordinary image files, so they come with you as they are. What doesn’t come with you is ScreenSnap Cloud links, Website Capture, and the wallpaper library with its style presets; screen recording is coming to hypershot soon.

Making the move
- Install hypershot from the download page. On a Mac, allow Screen Recording when macOS asks; on Windows there’s nothing to grant. Every feature is free for 7 days, so you can try it before you decide.
- Free up the keys. ScreenSnap’s Capture Area and Capture Area (Editor) shortcuts clash with hypershot’s defaults, listed above. ScreenSnap won’t clear those two, so turn each off with its switch in ScreenSnap’s Settings → Shortcuts. If your hands expect an area on ScreenSnap’s Capture Area key, swap Region capture and Screen capture in hypershot’s Settings → Shortcuts. On a Mac, taking over a system shortcut like ⌘⇧4 needs Accessibility permission. How shortcuts work.
- Bring along what you still edit. ScreenSnap saves screenshots as ordinary image files, so those need nothing. Recording projects open only in ScreenSnap, so export the ones you’re not done with as MP4 or GIF from its video editor. Anything you want back from ScreenSnap’s Capture History, restore and drag into a folder first, because those copies live in ScreenSnap’s own app data. From now on, every capture stays editable in a .hypercapture.
- Set where captures go. ScreenSnap saved to a ScreenSnap Pro folder on your Desktop; hypershot saves to Pictures/hypershot, which you can change under Settings → General → Save directory. ScreenSnap also copied every capture to the clipboard. To keep doing that, tick Copy to Clipboard under Settings → Captures → After capture, or choose Only Copy to skip the editor too.
- Rebuild your look. ScreenSnap’s styling panel becomes the artboard: padding, shadow, rounded corners, window chrome, and a solid, gradient or image background. Bring a favorite wallpaper along as an image file.
- When you’re sure, turn off Launch at Startup in ScreenSnap’s Settings → General, or uninstall it, so the two apps don’t compete for keys.
What stays behind
- ScreenSnap Cloud: hypershot has no hosted share links or auto upload. Links you already made stay on ScreenSnap’s service, managed from its Library.
- Screen recording, GIFs and the video editor: hypershot’s screen recording is coming soon.
- Website Capture: there’s no URL-to-image or device view. For a long page, use scrolling capture: you scroll the page yourself, and it stitches best scrolling down.
- A few editor tools: Magnifier, Emoji and Cut have no direct counterpart (Media can drop any image onto a capture).
- Your wallpapers, style presets and settings: nothing imports, so set them once with the steps above.
The verdict
ScreenSnap Pro makes screenshots pretty. hypershot makes them useful first and pretty on the way out. Different tools for different jobs — and both of them cost the same number of years: one.
