hypershot vs. Snagit
Snagit is the tool a lot of teams reach for without thinking about. TechSmith has poured a decade into it: polished annotation, solid capture on both platforms, and team workflows. If you need a tool your whole company can standardize on with training materials, it is a defensible pick. The question is what the price actually buys you after the third year.
The short answer
Snagit is polished and cross-platform, but it is a $39–48/year subscription. If your job is to capture, annotate, and share — and you would rather pay once — hypershot is the one-time-purchase alternative, with a design-app editor and frame scrubbing on both macOS and Windows.

Where hypershot is different
Burst capture
While you drag the selection, hypershot keeps a rolling clip of the last moment. Scrub the timeline to the exact frame — the hover state that closed when you blinked, the animation mid-motion.
The crop is never final
A region capture keeps the whole screen, so you can drag the crop back out later and everything you left out is still there, even after you reopen the file. Then add padding, swap the background, drop in window chrome.
Edits like a design app
A real canvas, not a markup sheet. Zoom and pan, marquee-select, move, resize and rotate with handles, bring to front or send to back, snap the crop to edges in the shot. Every change undoes, 500 steps deep by default.
Non-destructive, all the way down
Nothing gets burned in until you export. Every mark stays an object, the crop and background stay live, and the burst stays with the capture. Save a .hypercapture, reopen it next week, and move an arrow, re-crop, or pick a different frame.

Where Snagit is the right tool
- Team sharing, collections, and training docs
- Video capture and animated GIFs
- A long track record: an easy tool to standardize a whole company on
Where it leaves you wanting
- The subscription: pay every year or lose the tool you already bought your way of thinking with
- No frame scrubbing: the frame you grabbed is the frame you get
- The crop is final: a region capture keeps only the region, so a crop that came out too tight means taking the shot again
Switching from Snagit
Most of what you do with images in Snagit has a counterpart in hypershot, and each capture mode gets its own shortcut. Install hypershot (on a Mac, give it Screen Recording permission; on Windows there’s nothing to grant) and set your keys in Settings → Shortcuts. Then convert the Snagit captures you still need to PNG while your Snagit subscription or trial is still active, because .snagx files open only in Snagit. Video and GIF recording are coming to hypershot soon; what doesn’t come with you is Step Capture guides, Screencast share links and Snagit’s automatic tools like Smart Redact and Smart Move.

Making the move
- Install hypershot from the download page. On a Mac, allow Screen Recording when macOS asks; on Windows there’s nothing to grant. Every feature is free for 7 days, so you can run both apps side by side before you decide.
- Pick your keys. Snagit puts everything behind one capture key; hypershot gives each mode its own, listed above, and its defaults don’t clash with Snagit’s. To keep the key you already know (Print Screen on Windows, ⌃⇧C on a Mac), clear it in the shortcut field under Snagit’s Capture button first, then record it in hypershot’s Settings → Shortcuts. If Windows still grabs Print Screen, turn off Use the Print screen key to open screen capture in Windows’ keyboard settings. On a Mac, taking over ⌘⇧3 or ⌘⇧4 needs Accessibility permission. How shortcuts work.
- Convert what you still need while Snagit still runs. The Snagit Library keeps your captures as .snagx files, which open only in Snagit. Use Snagit’s Batch Convert Images to save them as PNGs before your subscription or trial ends; TechSmith says the tool needs an active one. The annotations become part of the image. Your Snagit videos and GIFs are already ordinary files, so copy them as they are. Anything you mark up from now on stays editable in a .hypercapture.
- Set where captures go. hypershot saves every capture to Pictures/hypershot; change it under Settings → General → Save directory. Snagit opened each capture in its editor, but hypershot drops it into the preview folder first. Set Settings → Captures → After capture to Edit to go straight to the editor, or Only Copy to copy and move on.
- When you’re sure, stop Snagit from starting with your computer so the two don’t compete for keys: turn off Run Snagit when Windows starts (Capture Preferences → General) on Windows, or Always keep Snagit running in the menu bar (Settings → General) on a Mac.
What stays behind
- Video recording, animated GIFs and Snagit’s video editing: hypershot’s screen recording is coming soon.
- Screencast and the share destinations: hypershot has no hosted links and doesn’t upload to Drive, Slack or Teams. Links you already made stay on Screencast.
- Step Capture, templates, Themes, and the automatic tools (Smart Redact, Smart Move, Simplify, Magic Wand): in hypershot you redact and mark up by hand.
- Automatic Scrolling Capture: in hypershot you scroll the page yourself, and it stitches best scrolling down.
- Your Library tags, presets and settings: nothing imports, so set them once with the steps above.
The verdict
Snagit is a fine machine you rent. If renting a screenshot tool every July sounds like a tax, this is the page for you.
